Canton, Saint Paul & Pacific Railway

A Quick Visit

by Rick Henderson

I finally managed a stopover in Canton while going to South Carolina. Canton is 225 miles or five hours from my house in northern TN. I had been trying to get down there for several years but after visiting, future trips to visit in SC will be routed through Canton to check on progress. It is only two hours from Chattanooga however.

Trip around shop loop from wye, past car-barn, back side of unloading and around ballast loading.
Shop area viewed from road. Entry road crosses tunnel. Shop viewed from 2nd & 3rd level loops.
The railroad mainline is 95% complete running from a lower wye and loop to an upper wye. The upper loop is the only portion left to complete. The mainline rises 29' over 3300 between the two wyes making the grade average just under one percent. There are two additional tunnels and one major trestle along the route.
View from upper level area, three levels of track and upper wye Main power for building railroad is GP-9 from Rail Systems

On a future visit I plan to not take most of my photos during a train ride and plan on spending several hours to get better photos.
